Every year pet owners spend over $100 million on raw pet food. In the last three years, this number has increased by 15 percent each year. While it is true that this represents only a fraction of the total pet food market, the new trend shows how pet parents are paying more attention to the overall health and nutrition of their furry friends.
Although most experts agree that it isn’t necessary to make a full switch from kibble to raw, supplementing your pet’s current diet with raw pet food can be a great way to keep them healthy– and happy.
So should you make the change? Here are a few things to keep in mind.
What is a raw pet food diet?
The raw pet food diet is based on the idea of going back to the foods that your pet’s ancestors would have found in nature. Many of the problems that are common with today’s pets are the result of poor nutrition. By adding lean meats and veggies one meal a day or incorporating commercial raw food products into your pet’s diet, your pet can be on its way to a healthier, more natural lifestyle.
Not totally convinced yet? Here are a few reasons to change your mind:
The benefits of raw pet food diets have been proven for decades.
The first major study dates back to 1932 when Dr. Francis M. Pottenger, Jr. spent ten years studying the health benefits of a raw food diet in cats. At the end of the study, Dr. Pottenger concluded that the cats fed raw meat experienced a longer lifespan, better temperament, higher immunity, less allergies and better overall health compared to the control group that were fed cooked meat.
If you think about it, it makes a lot of sense. To humans, making the choice to be healthy often means cutting out packaged, processed foods in favor of whole, natural choices. And for pets, it’s no different.
“Ideally, it is best to give pets as many fresh nutrients as possible,” pet nutritionist Susan Blake Davis told the OC Register. “These are often found in raw frozen diets, or you can add steamed, chopped homemade vegetables and lean meats to your pet’s diet.”
3. Health benefits
Sharon Misik, a pet mom to two Siberian huskies, witnessed the benefits of the raw food diet firsthand. After experiencing little luck with vet treatments for her dogs’ consistent diarrhea and eating problems, a holistic veterinarian suggested she try a raw pet food diet.
The results were incredible.
“They were like new dogs,” Misik told The New York Times. “They were happy and healthy, and their digestive systems improved dramatically. Since we started them on the raw food, these dogs have not been sick one day.”
4. Improved dental hygiene
Dogs who are fed strictly processed diets can develop tartar buildup, gum disease and emergency dental issues. Some vets attribute this to poor nutrition caused by low-grade dog foods.
However wild dogs and wolves usually don’t have these problems. This is because their diets are all natural. Through tearing through the raw meat and bones, their teeth are being scraped and cleaned. Therefore by adding similar raw alternatives to pet diets, many of the common dental problems can be avoided.
5. Shinier coat
Excessively oily or dry coats are often due to the lack of nutritious foods in a pet’s diet. Many pets fall on one end of the spectrum or the other: they either have dull, lackluster coats or feel greasy when you pet them.
Through the improved nutrition from raw food treats, pets often avoid these issues. Instead their fur is shiny, healthy, and gorgeous.
